Why We Do It
Several of the communities served by Sunrise are categorized as members of Calgary’s most vulnerable communities. Poverty is a real concern in East Calgary and we deliver a critical service towards reducing poverty in our community.
Reducing poverty and striving for resilient individuals and families and sustainable communities is imperative as 1 in 10 Calgarians are living in poverty and 1 in 5 children under the age of 15 in Calgary are living in poverty.
Approximately 35‚000 Calgary families face difficultly in affording the cost of adequate housing and assisting families find homes is one of the services and supports we provide at Sunrise. Research shows the severity of this issue as over the past 10 years‚ housing prices have increased 156%‚ yet incomes have increased only 34% over that same time.
