Sunrise serves a diverse community of people including families‚ single parents‚ grandparents with children‚ seniors‚ and single individuals, from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
The majority of people we serve(75%)are families with children that are experiencing poverty or a significant life event or crisis. Sometimes life is happening for people and they need assistance to help get them through.
We offer direct service and support to help individuals in the following East Calgary communities.

Dear Community Members,
Message from Sunrise
We are here for you, over the phone and online.
Due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, and the escalation of infections over the weekend, the Sunrise office will be closed until further notice in order to protect staff and vulnerable community members.
We're still here to help during this time. Should any community members require basic needs referrals, please contact us on 403-204-8280 in order to complete referrals over the phone. Please leave a message with your name, phone number, and how we can help, and we will return that as soon as possible.
Drop-in tax clinics are cancelled until further notice. We will be doing all we can to ensure that folks can get their taxes filed in a timely manner. To discuss options for filing your taxes during this time, please contact Darlene Doskoch on 587-583-6254, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.

The Team at Sunrise
Friday March 13, 2020
Dear Friends and Supporters of Sunrise,
We are committed to serving our community with help for today and hope for tomorrow. For the next few weeks, we will be operating our services a little differently in order to uphold and enact best practices in public health and safety.
Here is an update on the actions Sunrise is taking to help prevent the spread of the virus and flatten the curve, while continuing to serve our community with basic needs help, financial supports, and social connections.
Generally, we ask that Calgarians seeking supports call us first at 403-204-8280, so we may either meet your request over the phone or schedule an appointment with you to meet with one of our Community Advocates.
Basic Needs Services
If you or someone you are supporting would like access to basic needs referral services, please contact us at 403-204-8280 in order to make an appointment with one of our Community Advocates or have the referral completed over the phone.
Sunrise has traditionally served the community with basic needs help on a drop-in first come, first served basis. In order to minimise the numbers of people who are in our shared space at one time, we will begin the process of transitioning our Basic Needs Referral services to be completed over the phone or via appointment only, rather than on a drop-in basis. Drop-in services will no longer be available starting Wednesday March 18th, 2020.
Our Community Volunteer Income Tax Clinics are extremely popular, with upwards of 60 people attempting to access this service each week. We love offering this vital service and we deeply appreciate all the volunteers who give their time to our Tax Clinics, however having so many people in a small space at the same time represents a significant risk to transmission. To minimise this risk, we are moving to an appointment-based service for our tax clinics. The changes to our tax clinic services will take effect from the Wednesday March 18th 2020 tax clinic onward.
We are here to help you file your taxes over the phone and by appointment. In order to book an appointment for our low-income tax clinics, please contact us on (403) 204-8280 and we will book you in a time to either meet with one of our tax clinic volunteers, drop-off your paperwork, or conduct your simple tax return with you over the phone.
The Taking Charge Program is cancelled until further notice. If you have any questions about Taking Charge, please contact Taylor at or 403-204-8280 ext. 104.
Bread and other basic needs items pick-ups
We are striving to continue with bread pick-up on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Please note that these deliveries are subject to the limitations of our volunteers and the stock available from the organizations and businesses who donate these items.
As these organisations work on their own response plans there may be intermittent and unforeseen disruptions to these deliveries in the short term. If you would like to check if bread is available for pick up before coming into the Sunrise office, please contact our main office line on 403-204-8280.
Stopping the Spread of the Virus
We ask community members who are sick, or believe that they are at risk, to stay home and contact us by phone at 403-204-8280 or email us at in order to request any referral services needed.
We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience during this time and we thank you for continuing to support Sunrise. We are privileged to serve you and our community and look forward to seeing you soon.
